Supernatural
6.04 Weekend At Bobby’s
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Was so nice to see what a weekend is like for Bobby. The poor guy, everyone wants something and they seem to want it NOW.
I enjoyed how exasperated Bobby became with the boys and their need for him to solve their problems. I mean come on, it’s not like Bobby doesn’t have a few issues of his own. Sheesh, Bobby only has to deal with everyone’s bull but he has his soul to get back from a demon that we all knew had no intention of giving it back.
For the directorial debut of Jensen Ackles this was by far the one I could see his sense of fun coming through. How much fun must it have been for him to direct this episode. Kudos to Jensen and all of the cast/crew of Supernatural. Well done.
I have to say my absolute favorite part was when Dean calls Bobby to “whine” about Sam and Bobby then lays into both of them. You know that Bobby loves them, as he says, like they are his own…this gives him the right to rip into them. However, did anyone else notice that Dean was the only one of the two that actually looked somewhat ashamed? Sam on the other hand was somewhat unemotional with the “All you had to do was ask” comment. The old Sam would have been apologetic, this new Sam….not so much.
The boys did come through for Bobby, going to where Crowley’s bones were buried was awesome. Here is another tell about the “changed” Sam….When Dean was willing to burn Crowley’s bones anyway for Sam to say “A deal is a deal” made me sit up and say “What?”. The look on Dean’s face pretty much said the same thing.
I have to give this episode an A+
For Jensen Ackles directorial debut….A++
Once again, great job.
6.03 The Third Man
We have all been waiting for them to bring Cas back in to the picture, the way the writers went about it was wonderful.
Now, I do need to say this (let the hissing begin) I do not feel that the scenes of Sam exercising etc did anything for the episode. I, like other women out there, do appreciate a fabulous bod but still. (Dodges tomatoes)
Okay, on with the review…. The creepy is back!! Glad to see that the writers are bringing back the traditional monster, icky factor into our beloved show.
I really liked how it took Dean to get Cas to answer and show up. Sam complaining and then realizing that Cas was right behind him was very funny. Did anyone else expect Cas to smack Sam upside the head while giving a “Duh” look?
I knew at some point the “civil war” in heaven would come about. The fact that one angel is giving out pieces of heavenly weapons was somewhat of a shock. Talk about sibling rivalry, it makes Sam and Dean’s look tame in comparison.
Dean was a tad rusty looking in episode 6.02 however it was good to see that he remembered the angel traps and how to blast them back where they came from. Watching Cas get the tar beat out of him was hard, but leave it to the boys to have his back.
How many of you cheered when Sam’s car was obliterated by Angels? I was yelling “YEAH about time” while it was happening. It puts the boys back in the Impala together. The fact that Sam has gathered more “stuff” and needs more room was kind of bland to me, considering they did not hint at what kind of stuff it was.
Dean having a conversation with Ben about telling the truth was comical, especially when Dean told Ben that he can recognize a lie considering he makes a living at it.
The end of the episode brought out what we all suspected, the fact that Dean knows something is off with Sam. It was a low blow for Sam to tell Dean that Hell only really affected Dean in a really bad way. “Are you saying you are stronger than me?” was filled with anger/hurt/surprise in Dean’s voice made me want to smack Sam. Yeah, there is definitely something so not right with Sam. We saw some of it in Season 5, but now it has us all wondering……is it really Sam that came back or is there some vital part of him missing?
As usual, an A grade for the episode.
6.02 Two And A Half Men
Wow!! Talk about total role reversals. Sam having to talk Dean in to helping him take care of a shifter. Now, I can understand Dean’s resistance considering all that man has been through but still, for Sam having to tell Dean to make an exception was something to watch.
Dean has always had a soft spot where children are concerned and you could tell Sam was playing on that. I love the look that Sam gives Dean when they have to go on a supply run…..for baby items. Sam to me seemed a tad slow on the draw when the female shifter grabbed the baby. Does Sam seem a little odd to any of you?
Taking the baby to Grandpa Campbell obviously was NOT a good idea in anyone’s book, however Sam seemed to have no trouble with this. We all know that Dean does not trust easily and his confusion at Sam placing so much trust in the Campbell side of the family was going to cause more friction between the brothers.
After the daddy of all shifters takes the baby after beating the tar out of Sam, Dean, Grandpa Campbell and killing a couple of them proved that things aren’t what they seem.
I personally have not trusted Grandpa Campbell since first seeing him in the first episode. Samuel Campbell is working for someone, who we do not know. For him to be brought back along with Sam has raised hackles on Dean, betrayal is in the offing.
I was prepared to not like Lisa but I have to say that when she tells Dean to go and to come back when he can, in one piece, I liked her a lot. She knew that Dean was not happy with the whole suburb, working as a construction worker, family at home kinda guy. You can tell that they care for each other deeply, but is it love? Give the gal kudos for knowing just what Dean needs, to be who he really is…a hunter and to be with his brother.
The ending of this episode was classic…Dean closing the trunk of his baby, the Impala. You could tell that he was coming back to himself.
All in all I give this episode an A….of course I give most of them that grade but still.
6.01 Exile on Main St
A short and sweet review for you this week folks as your usual reviewer (@lefembat2) is unavailable so your friendly neighbourhood Colonel is filling in.
I had some worries with the end of last season and the word that the show would be returning for a new season, usually a renewal can only be viewed as a positive thing, however the 5 year storyline has been something we’ve all been aware of, as viewers for a long time – the idea of going beyond the endgame could be extremely risky as the potential for the show to lose it’s spark is extremely high.
After the first episode I think I can say, for now – that this doesn’t seem to be the case, the writers avoided the biggest question we as fans had (how are they going to answer the questions of last seasons finale?) by not answering thrum, but they also went a step further and introduced a bunch more new ones, namely the return of Sam from the box and Samuel Campbell from heaven, add to that the fact that a whole year has passed and we as viewers and Dean are largely unaware of what’s gone on in that time period.
The one thing that I have to say I was sad to see is the lack of Castiel, it would appear that Misha Collins is no longer credited as a star – it does seem as though he is going to appear in at least one episode this season so he’s not gone forever at least
Emotions run high throughout this episode, Dean feeling torn between the life he had and the one he has now being the most palpable and as always a stellar performance from Jim Beaver as Bobby.
As always things aren’t simple in the Supernatural universe and Grampa Campbell and his hunter family have an agenda that we can assume Sam is unaware of, is this part of whatever brought him and Sam back to life or something else, who can say at this point but i think it’s safe to say that we’re in for quite a ride this season.
5.22 Swan Song
I have avoided doing the review of Season 5 Finale for almost two weeks. Only excuse I have that is the truth is….I was trying to reconcile the fact that a story arc that has been with us for 5 glorious years has ended.
Now I know that we have Season 6 to look forward to, I however am still reeling from the end of Season 5. *Heaves heavy sigh* Okay, enough procrastinating, on with my review.
I really enjoyed how the Impala was used in this episode, from the assembly line to the show down in the cemetery. We all know that the Impala means a lot to Dean and a little of why, but seeing exactly what made it so special not only to Dean but to Sam as well was awesome.
The conversation between Sam and Dean, when Dean told Sam that he was on board with what Sam wanted to do was very significant for both of them. The surprise Sam showed for why Dean was agreeing was telling. For Dean to agree for Sam to put himself into danger, with the end result more than likely being Sam’s death was hard. It took a lot of courage for Dean to admit that Sam was grown (I love the line “overgrown) man and it was not up to Dean to allow Sam to DO anything made my heart clench. It clenched further when Dean told Sam that taking care of him had always been his job and was pretty much who Dean was.
I had trouble watching Dean struggle with his emotions while Sam was filling jugs with Demon blood to use in the fight with Lucifer, it was even harder to watch Sam say his goodbyes to Bobby as well as Cas….and asking Dean not to watch while he tanked up to be stronger.
This episode had to many moments that were hard to watch and not cry. The look of anguish on Dean’s face when their plan failed and Lucifer took Sam over and left, leaving Dean with no idea what to do. The inability of Dean to just let Sam do what he needed to without his support. The ingrained need of Dean to protect Sam, to be there for him made me cry “Well, I ain’t going to let him die alone” caused me to sob.
The dual role that Jared Padalecki portrayed during the reflection scene between Sam and Lucifer was epic. He has shown his depth of acting ability numerous times before, however in this one scene the scope of his talent really shined through. To do a dual role with yourself has to be extremely hard to do, we saw this with Dean during the dream root episode. I was very impressed but also anxious because we all knew that Sam was losing, Lucifer was too strong.
I had one issue with this episode, the scene with Sam/Lucifer and Adam/Michael. I felt the dialogue was somewhat lame, the flow just was not there. The one redeeming thing about it was it did show the parallels between Lucifer/Michael and Sam/Dean. The younger brother rebelling against their father, the older one following their father’s orders.
Another epic moment was when we see Dean slide a tape into the tape deck of the Impala and Def Leppard’s Rock of Ages began to play as Dean drove the Impala into the graveyard. Dean’s cocky attitude was in full swing as he asked if he was interrupting anything. Dean’s desire to talk to Sam, for what could be the last time, was typical Dean.
Adam/Michael telling Dean that he had no part in the struggle anymore was like a slap in Dean’s face. I had one chuckle in this whole episode, when Cas called Adam/Michael and ass-butt and then throw a Molotov cocktail made from Holy water causing Adam/Michael to burn and disappear then shrugging his shoulders. There was an EW factor when Sam/Lucifer said that no one messes with his brother but him and caused Cas to explode.
When Sam/Lucifer threw Dean into the Impala windshield, Bobby pulled the Colt and shot Sam/Lucifer twice I KNEW that was so not going to turn out well. As I thought, Sam/Lucifer twisted his hand and snapped Bobby’s neck, causing Dean to scream NO.
The hardest scenes to watch was Sam/Lucifer beating the tar out of Dean, with Dean telling Sam he would not leave, would not leave Sam, that he was there. Then, the gleam of the sun off of the Impala caused Sam/Lucifer to pause in beating Dean to death, allowing Sam to regain control. The flashes from childhood through all of the time of the boys lives in the car and together was touching. Sam telling Dean that he had Lucifer and was able to complete his role made my heart go still.
Sam throwing the rings on the ground, doing the incantation and then preparing to fall into the pit with Lucifer was a tad blah….as well as Adam/Michael trying to stop him. When Sam grabbed Adam/Michael and pulled them into the pit together you could see Dean breaking.
Dean on his knees where Sam went into the pit all bloody and broken, not just in body but in mind and spirit caused me to sob. I was shocked when Cas showed up, whole and healthy and with his Angel powers back plus some, healing Dean and then Bobby. While I agree with some that the fact that beloved character did not actually die made me happy, it was a little too pat. Now, don’t get me wrong, I feel that Bobby NEEDS to be alive but Cas? This may upset some, but this is my own view on this.
Yes, I did leave out the scene of the conversation between Sam and Dean on the way to confront Lucifer….I did it on purpose. The whole conversation with Sam telling Dean that if he DID go in the pit that Dean was not to save him broke my heart. My heart broke into smaller pieces when Sam demanded that Dean promise him not to try to get him back, also that Dean was to go to Lisa and Ben, have BBQs watch football and have an apple pie life. During this scene the anger and hurt Dean displayed was upsetting, however we did not get to see Dean agree.
We find out through the Prophet Chuck that Dean would not see Bobby again for a long time and Dean DID make that promise to Sam by going to Lisa. You could see how hard Dean was trying to keep it together, but when Lisa grabbed him into a hug and told him it was okay he was able to let go.
The end of this episode left questions as a season finale should, however it was frustrating. When Lisa asked Dean if he was okay, he said yes but drank from a glass we could all figure contained whiskey. I knew that for Dean, no matter how much he secretly wanted this kind of life and his desire to hold to his promise to Sam, this life would ultimately not work.
The question remains, and will plague us all until Season 6 starts, why did the street lamp burst with who we assume is Sam standing outside of Lisa’s house? I thought only an Angel or a Demon could do that. Also, was it really Sam…..Dean’s Sammy…..that was watching or was there something more?
I for one am happy that there will be a Season 6, another part of me has some trepidation about where it will go with what has happened in the finale. The show would not be the same without the brothers being together at some point so my hope is that they will…somehow be brothers again. I do realize that with all that has gone down that the chances of Sam and Dean being able to be as close as they once were may not be possible. However, I will maintain my optimism that at least some of it will come back.
Now, in closing the longest review for me to date, I do want to bring up…..is Chuck God? I always thought there was more to Chuck that just being a Prophet and his ability to know everything about the brothers and their story was a tad suspicious. What say you?
5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight
As I said in my last review, the nail biting is getting more pronounced. This episode did something that rarely happens to me…..left me so keyed up my stomach hurt and my heart was pumping. There were some comedic moments that Supernatural wouldn’t be the show it is without.
The search for Pestilence with the information given to the boys from Crowley, was somewhat easy by Winchester standards…that should have been a HUGE red flag. They found the 3rd horseman in a nursing home and when they tried to get to him, Pestilence infected the guys with some pretty nasty viruses. Just when you think the boys may be done for in charges Cas, a Cas that has lost his “angel mojo” as Dean puts it. Cas saves the guys by cutting off Pestilence’s ring and Pestilence vanishes. Not before telling Sam and Dean that “you’re too late”. What does that mean? That Sam and Dean are too late to stop the Apocalypse?
The boys are back at Bobby’s house looking defeated. Bobby reveals, somewhat forced to by Crowley, that he sold his soul to gain the whereabouts of Death. This naturally upsets Dean to no end. Coupled with Sam’s suggestion of throwing himself into the pit while dragging Lucifer with him, Dean is left reeling and pretty angry.
I liked the fact the that Crowley put a small addition to the deal he made with Bobby….That Bobby get the use of his legs back to help in the fight. Now, as I said before, Crowley is a demon and just what is in it for Crowley other than what he has stated before? An altruistic Demon???
Sam, Bobby and Cas take off in one vehicle to stop the spread of the Crotoan virus that Lucifer and Pestilence are going to unleash on the world. Dean heads off with Crowley to find Death.
Sam and Bobby break into the shipping facility that the virus is going to be distributed from and typical for Sam he rushes to save innocents. They are able to stop the shipments from going out or so it seems. This was left somewhat open to interpretation considering no clear message was delivered saying it was stopped.
Dean, with Crowley, head to Chicago to find Death. Dean becomes frustrated by Crowley’s seemingly inability to locate Death as he said he could. Eventually Crowley “finds” Death and leaves Dean to deal with the last and most dangerous horseman.
As Dean enters, Death knows he is there and knows he has the sickle that belongs to Death that Crowley gave Dean. Death takes it back and requests Dean sit and eat pizza with him. Death tells Dean that he will give up his ring with the promise that Dean will make sure that Sam jumps into the pit taking Lucifer with him. Death reveals to Dean that Lucifer has bound him by a spell and is forced to do Lucifer’s bidding and wants out. Dean agrees…..Death warns him that you cannot cheat death.
Back at Bobby’s salvage yard Dean is sitting at a work table watching the rings join together as if magnetized. Bobby walks over and talks with Dean about how Sam may be all kinds of messed up but he is still good inside and ultimately Sam is there only hope. Bobby asks Dean “are you afraid to lose, or lose your brother?” The look on Dean’s face was hard to see. The brothers have gone through so much and given up so much for each other that you can tell the answer for Dean is hard.
Over all I give this episode an A- simply because some of the elements were too pat with no elaboration or answer to some small questions.
5.20 The Devil You Know
Each remaining episode leading to the finale is more nail biting than the last. In this episode we see the re-emergence of Crowley and his “willingness” to help our boys get all 4 of the Horsemen’s rings to put “Lucifer back in his box”. Now, I am of the same opinion as Sam and Dean as to the “honesty” of a Demon.
When Crowley stated he knew where the stableboy for the Horsemen was and that he could help get the ring from Pestilence I was a tad skeptical just as Sam was. I was surprised that Dean actually went with Crowley. I do think that Dean is willing to do almost anything to keep Sam from being used by Lucifer and in his mind this gets them one step closer.
This decision to go alone with Crowley was just asking for trouble, what with leaving Sam behind while doing so, opened up the ability for there to be some Dean whumpage. Not surprising actually, I saw it coming. What did really strike an odd cord was Sam’s somewhat drunken call to Bobby saying that if he (Sam) was to take the rings and jump, taking Lucifer with him, it could stop everything. Bobby was good as usual at telling Sam it was a stupid idea and to imagine Dean’s reaction to it.
When Crowley and Dean get back with who Sam thought was his good friend things got hairy. Dean saying he trusted Sam was a big deal for both boys, it showed that Dean’s faith in his little brother was resurfacing. I was proud of Sam, even in his anger and Dean backing him off, in not killing the Demon.
Crowley going to Bobby with an offer made me bite my nails. Crowley offered the location of Death if Bobby gave up his soul….well let Crowley “borrow” it for a while. Now, how many of you actually believe Crowley’s assurance that once things were settled he would give Bobby his soul back? This is a Demon after all, when have we seen a Demon with altruistic tendencies that are real?
I for one had the suspicion that Bobby would say yes, anything to help Sam and Dean defeat Lucifer and save the world.
I like Crowley, I like his style. I just do not trust him.
Dean standing back and allowing Sam to get rid of Demon possessed friend was somewhat difficult to watch. Sam was so angry over everything and Dean was resigned, knowing that Sam needed this.
My over all rating for this was an A…….of course I like them all.
5.19 Hammer Of The Gods
This episode was fun. It had the brothers back to being brothers, humor, gore, action. The sad part was the death of Gabriel, that was unexpected.
The episode starts with a huge downpour of rain, almost biblical in it’s intensity forcing Sam and Dean to stop at what appears to be a 4 star hotel in the middle of no where. Sam is a bit suspicious, however Dean is just happy to be out of the elements. The inside of the hotel raises the boys eyebrows, being far nicer than anything they have stayed in before. If the people in the hotel and those working for the hotel are a tad off, who are they to say anything.
The weird begins when a couple are in the next room, making considerable noise, and disappear. Sam and Dean are a tad suspicious when they ask the front desk clerk where the couple went. When informed that the couple checked out the boys suspicions are further aroused considering the missing couple were supposedly on their honeymoon and left a wedding ring behind.
As the boys investigate to see what is going on they naturally run into some bad guys and some gore……namely body parts as part of the hotel menu and people locked up in the walk in freezer. Before Sam and Dean can rescue the people they are captured and taken to a banquet hall…..where the Gods of old are in a meeting and Sam and Dean are the “guests of honor”.
The old Gods have decided they can use Sam and Dean as bargaining chips to stop the apocalypse. Sam saying the line “we are sooo screwed” was an example of the humor coming back to the show. Gabriel aka “The Trickster” showing up was a surprise, posing as Loki the god of mischief was not. Sam and Dean are further taken aback when Gabriel says he had a fling with the Goddess Kali. Gabriel decides to use his past association with Kali to steal back viles of blood that were taken from the boys to bind them to her and prevent them from leaving the hotel. Predictabley the plan fails and Kali stabs Gabriel with an Angel sword, supposedly killing him.
There is a traitor among the old Gods…Mercury. Mercury, from what was inferred, made a deal with Lucifer to contact him as soon as Sam and Dean were trapped so that Lucifer can claim his vessel. Gabriel decides, after a talk with Dean in the Impala (where Dean discovers that the sword was a fake) to confront Lucifer, his brother, so that the boys can escape.
The confrontation between Lucifer and Gabriel was typical in it’s intensity. Lucifer kills Gabriel, but the boys escape dragging Kali with them out of the hotel.
The only problem I had with this episode was why did they take Kali with them? If she was a Goddess why couldn’t she get herself out? The episode ended on a somewhat flat note leaving questions, small ones but important.
The previews for episode 5.20 seem to bring into play things for Sam that could rock his already precarious world further. The season is winding down, getting more intense…..Gives you goose bumps.
5.18 Point Of No Return
This episode was a really great one. It had the elements of suspense, surprise, oh my gosh, how could he, and about time all in 60 minutes.
While not being completely surprised that Dean was giving in, I was still saddened that he would. With all that the brothers have been through, Dean in particular, their distance from each other was getting harder and harder to bear. The brothers had always been the rock for the other and to have Dean give up, say yes to Michael, was for Sam confusing.
The heartbreaking part for me was when Dean told Bobby he wasn’t his father and not in his shoes. Had to hand it to Bobby, even with the hurt that those words caused he still got his point across to Dean about not giving up. The look that Sam gave Dean was great, the look said “how could you?” Perfect.
The return of Adam, the Winchesters’ illegitimate younger brother, was a surprise and for Zachariah to say that he was the new vessel for Michael was a bit of a shock. Adams’ conversation with Sam was touching, in the fact that for Sam and Dean family is everything, for Adam to say he didn’t want them was hard for Sam to hear.
Dean’s escape from the panic room was inventive to say the least, considering he knew that trying to get past Sam would be hard he waited for Cas then used the banishment on him.
Castiel was both funny and a tad scary in the fact his dead pan delivery of lines and then when he beat the tar out of Dean. To see Dean actually frightened of the angel then resigned was hard to watch.
The one problem I had with the episode was when Cas returned to Bobby’s house with Dean all beat up Sam’s only reaction was “What the hell happened to him?” Normally the angst would have been there over the fact Dean was bleeding and unconscious. The scene in the panic room, Dean handcuffed to the cot, and Sam asking how he was feeling kind of made up for it. The line Dean gave of “don’t piss off the nerdy angels” was typical Dean.
The brother’s conversation was heartfelt. Sam telling Dean that he had faith in him to do the right thing brought their relationship back into focus somewhat. It still left the viewer wondering how they could begin to start repairing the relationship with Dean willing to give up.
The angst and emotion from Dean in the angel room, where Zachariah had spirited Adam to, was genuine. Zachariah had started his typical torture of a Winchester, first with Adam then with Sam, that left Dean feeling helpless…an emotion that Dean has a hard time dealing with. Dean telling Zachariah that yes, he would agree to be Michaels’ vessel if he stopped the torture of his younger siblings was disappointing to Sam. The looks between the brothers was sad, their silent communication in full play…..however the wink Dean gave Sam left Sam confused.
In typical Dean style he turned the tables on Zachariah saying he had conditions, one of which that Michael kill Zachariah. The angel scoffed at Dean stating no way would Michael do that. The surprise on his face when Dean killed him was great to see. Dean trying to make sure both of his younger brothers got out of the room before Michael arrived was not a shock. The shock came when Dean got Sam out and Adam was locked inside. Dean went back to try to get Adam out, but was unable to. This left a huge question…..did Michael take Adam to use him??
The conversation between Sam and Dean in the last moments of the episode renewed my faith in the fact that the brothers are now on their way to being on the same page again. When Dean tells Sam that the reason he changed his mind was because if Sam could still have faith in him…..he should return the favor was awesome.
All in all this episode had the elements that were missing from the last one. The brothers coming back together like they should be, fighting the angels to keep from having to fight each other. Their purpose in the coming events clear to each other.
Even though I know there will be huge shocks and disappointments in the coming episodes I truly think that this one helped to breathe a sigh in the collective viewers that maybe, just maybe the brothers will begin to be true brothers again.
What do you think?
5.17 99 Problems
I try to wait for several days for my review of each episode to help avoid any spoilers, so here is hoping.
This episode finds the Winchester brothers with allies they never expected. As with every other time they think they have found something good the boys soon find themselves with a problem…..a town full of demon “hunters” getting their information from a prophet and the townspeople blindly following.
Sam and Dean soon learn that the “prophet” Leah is not who she pretends to be thanks to information provided by a drunk Cas. Now I have to admit, drunk Cas was pretty dang funny and the look on Sam’s face was priceless.
Dean is beginning to worry Sam because it appears that Dean is giving up, going back on the promise the boys made to each other to work to stop the end of the world. Dean comes through by taking out the false prophet but at what price?
According to Cas, only a messenger of God could kill the Whore of Babylon. The question is raised….how could Dean have killed this creature?
The only problem I had with this episode is why did Dean take off, leaving Sam, to go to his old flame and promise to keep her and her son safe. Dean has on only a few occasions mentioned what it would be like to have a “normal” life, why now and with this particular woman? One would think that Dean would have tried to find Cassie, the only woman he ever admitted to loving.
Over all I give this episode an 8. I have seen previews for the upcoming episode and I have to tell you, a couple of scenes broke my heart. I really do love this show and hope that they can make the smooth transition from end of the world to the brothers once again saving a few at a time in Season 6. Not to mention trying to close the gap that has opened up between Sam and Dean and allow them to, maybe not be the same, but get back to being brothers.
